What is a short code?
To unsubscribe from a premium messaging program, use one of the following options:
- Reply to the number you are receiving the text messages from with one of the following keywords: STOP, CANCEL, REMOVE, UNSUBSCRIBE, END, QUIT, ARRET. You will receive a free confirmation text message informing you that your subscription has been cancelled.
- Contact the support number provided on your invoice or in the text message. You will be able to opt-out through an IVR or by speaking to a customer service representative.
If you are subscribed to more than one premium messaging program (on different short codes), you will need to opt-out of each separately.
How to use a keyword
Similar to a telephone number, premium messages short codes are special 3 to 8 digit codes used to route text messages from mobile phones to interactive mobile messaging applications, typically in combination with a keyword. They are designed to be shorter to read and easier to remember than normal telephone numbers. Short codes also allow for billing and other unique forms of interaction via a mobile phone such as television voting, ordering ringtones, charity donations and mobile chat services.
How premium messaging charges will appear on your invoice
Used in combination with a short code, a keyword is a word that differentiates a mobile campaign from others on the same short code. The keyword and short code combination allows mobile phone users to sign up for a particular service on that short code. Keywords are also used to receive more information on a short code program (HELP, INFO, AIDE) or to opt-out of a program (STOP, CANCEL, REMOVE, UNSUBSCRIBE, END, QUIT, ARRET).
Getting more information on the premium messaging services
Premium messaging charges will appear under the third party charges section of your bill. Each transaction will show the date of the first chargeable transaction for your billing cycle along with the content provider's name, short code and program name, the support contact information, the quantity of chargeable messages and the unit and total amount charged.
How to proceed if you feel that you've been charged for services that you didn't sign up for
To get more information, reply HELP or INFO to the short code. You will receive a return message stating the program name and a short description of the program, customer service contact information (URL, email or phone number), cost and frequency of the program as well as information about how to cancel the service by texting STOP.
How to proceed if you signed up for a service that you didn't realize you had to pay for
Contact the support number or email for the service provided in your bill under the third party charges section. They will be able to give you the details of your account and the services used on your phone.
How to proceed if you forgot that you are subscribed to a service
All advertising material for a subscription based premium service is required to clearly state the cost and frequency of the service. After subscribing, you will receive a free administrative message indicating the cost of the service, the message frequency and the customer service contact information. All premium subscription services require that you confirm the subscription twice. This is done to ensure you are aware of the cost per message and frequency of messages as well as opt-out information. The user must then reply to this message with the keyword YES in order to accept the subscription service. If you wish to cancel a service, reply to the short code that the service is coming from with the keyword STOP.
It is mandatory that all subscription programs send out a monthly subscription reminder to subscribers stating the name of the subscription service, the cost of the service and message frequency, instructions on how to opt-out and customer service contact information. If you wish to cancel a service, reply to the short code that the service is coming from with the keyword STOP.
