How do I use my BlackBerry?

How do I setup and activate my BlackBerry Pearl 8100?

  • Make sure you've loaded the SIM card into the SIM card tray and the battery into your BlackBerry Pearl 8100.
  • The battery should be fully charged. Turn on by pressing the power on/off key (the red phone key).
  • The Setup Wizard should appear.
  • If the Setup Wizard does not start up, scroll to the Setup Wizard icon, and click the trackball.
  • Follow the setup instructions on the screen.

What do I do if my BlackBerry handheld is lost or stolen?

If you suspect that your BlackBerry has been stolen or lost, contact Fido Customer Service at 1-888-481-3436 to have your unit deactivated on the network. Once your BlackBerry device has been deactivated, all services will cease.

As a pre-cautionary measure you should use the password protection feature to prevent any unauthorized access to your handheld.

How do I know my BlackBerry handheld code?

On the BlackBerry handheld, go to Options> About. The handheld code information is listed under the BlackBerry model information or from the main screen, press down the (ALT), (Shift) and the (H) key all at the same time, this will show the "Help Me!" menu

What is BlackBerry Internet Service?

BlackBerry Internet Service is an Internet-based e-mail service that can bring together up to 10 personal and work e-mail accounts all on your BlackBerry handheld. Your e-mail is automatically delivered to the palm of your hand so you can read, reply, and send e-mail on the go. It's fast, simple, always on, and always connected.

BlackBerry Internet Service is included as a basic part of any BlackBerry e-mail service plan from Fido, and supports many popular e-mail accounts such as Rogers, Yahoo, Hotmail and many more. You also get your own new BlackBerry Internet E-mail address (username@fido.blackberry.net).

How do I setup BlackBerry Internet Service on the BlackBerry Pearl 8100?

Scroll the trackball to the Email Settings icon on the home screen and click the trackball. You will automatically be directed to the BlackBerry Internet Service site. You can either provide your existing email address or scroll to "Create New Account", which will allow you to create an BlackBerry email address. You can also access BlackBerry Internet Service from a PC/laptop by going http://na.blackberry.com/eng/support/blackberry101/setup.jsp#tab_tab_email.

How do I create a BlackBerry Internet Service account?

There are two ways to create a BlackBerry Internet Service Account. From your BlackBerry device, click the Email Settings icon and you will be taken to the BlackBerry Internet Service website. From your desktop computer (via Internet browser): go to http://fido.blackberry.com

What is my User name for my BlackBerry Internet Service?

Your BlackBerry Internet Service user name is created when you first set up your BlackBerry Internet Service account. It may differ from your UserID@fido.blackberry.com.

What is my BlackBerry Internet Service password?

If you can't remember your password, click the "Forgot password?" link on the BlackBerry Internet Service mainpage, enter your BlackBerry Internet Service email address in the "User ID" field and your password will be sent to your device. Fido does not have any record of your password for security reasons.

Can I access BlackBerry Internet Service outside of Canada?

Yes, the BlackBerry Internet Service is a web based e-mail service that can be accessed anywhere you have an Internet connection. This is indicated by a GPRS or EDGE being displayed on your BlackBerry screen in the upper right hand corner.

What is a PIN?

PIN is short for Personal Identification Number. Each handheld has a unique PIN, just like every phone line has a unique phone number. PINs are up to 8 digits long.

If you know the PIN of another BlackBerry handheld, you can send messages directly to that PIN instead of the person's e-mail address. Enter the recipient's PIN in the address field and select Use PIN.

Find your PIN by selecting the Options icon, then selecting Status. Your PIN appears in the Status screen

How do I send an email message from my BlackBerry Pearl 8100?

Sending an email message on the BlackBerry Pearl 8100.

  1. Click either the Messages icon on your BlackBerry Pearl 8100 or the icon for any email addresses you have set-up, then press the Menu key, which is to the left of the trackball;
  2. Click Compose Email.
  3. In the To field, perform one of the following actions:
    • Type an email address.
    • Type a contact name.
    • Type part of a contact name then select a contact from the suggested list.
  4. Type a message.
  5. Click the trackball.
  6. Click Send.

Note: If your BlackBerry® device is associated with more than one email address, in the Send Using field, you can set the email address that you want to use to send the email message.

Can the BlackBerry Internet Service retrieve e-mail from my Internet Service provider or portals?

BlackBerry Internet Service can be configured to retrieve e-mail from Internet portals such as Rogers Yahoo!, Google Gmail, MSN (Hotmail) and AOL. Internet Service Providers (ISP) that use the POP3 and IMAP protocols are also supported. Please contact your Internet Service provider to ask about your e-mail server type and settings.

How much e-mail is 1 MB of BlackBerry data?

1 MB is approximately 500-1000 e-mails based on data compression by the BlackBerry solution. On average, 1 email equals approximately 1-2KB.

How do I setup email filters on BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS)?

BlackBerry Internet Service 2.0 and later:

Step 1 - Create a filter to prevent messages containing specific information.

  1. Log into your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
  2. Click the Filters icon beside the hosted address @.blackberry.com.
  3. Under the "When no filters apply:", select the "Do not forward messages to handheld" option.
  4. If filters already exist for this account, click the Add Filter link.
  5. If the screen displays "No filters configured. Click here to add one", click the Click here link.
  6. Add the following filter and click Add Filter:
    Filter Name - choose something you can easily recognize.
    Apply filter when - select "To" field * from the drop-down menu
    Contains - now type your BlackBerry email address
    Finally, select the "Forward messages to handheld" option.
    Note: The "Header only" option is not recommended. This sends you the message without the body/text. If you want to read the entire message, you'd then have to request it.
  7. Configure another filter with the following settings:
    Filter Name - something you can easily recognize
    Apply filter when - select "CC" field * from the drop-down menu
    Contains - type your BlackBerry email address
    Select the "Forward messages to handheld" option
    Note: The "Header only" option is not recommended.
    Important: If you have a forwarding rule from a third-party account pointing to your BlackBerry Internet Service email address, you must repeat steps 6 and 7 so that it contains this address.

Step 2 - Create a filter to allow messages containing specific information

  1. Log into your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
  2. Click the Filters icon beside the hosted address @.blackberry.com.
  3. Under "When no filters apply:" click the "Do not forward messages to handheld" option.
  4. If filters already exist for this account, click the Add Filter link.
  5. If the screen displays "No filters configured. Click here to add one", click the Click here link.
  6. Configure the filter by entering your preferred settings in the following fields
    "Filter Name" - something you can easily recognize
    "Apply filter when" - select either the "To" , "From" , "CC", or "Subject" field * from the drop-down menu.
    "Contains" - information in the above selected field to allow messages to arrive to the BlackBerry device.
    Select the "Forward messages to handheld" option.
    Note: It is not recommended to use the "Header only" option.

Step 3 - Create a filter to disallow messages to an account (this can be used if you are not using your @.blackberry.net address.

  1. Log into your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
  2. Click the Filters icon beside the hosted address @.blackberry.com.
  3. Under the "When no filters apply:" click the "Do not forward messages to handheld" option.
  4. If filters already exist for this account, click the Add Filter link.
  5. If the screen displays "No filters configured. Click here to add one", click the Click here link.
  6. Configure the filter by entering your preferred settings in the following fields
    "Filter Name" - something you can easily recognize
    "Apply filter when" - select either the "To" , "From" , "CC", or "Subject" field * from the drop-down menu.
    "Contains" - information in the above selected field to allow messages to arrive to the BlackBerry device.

Why are my e-mail and SMS messages not being sent ?

A clock icon on the Messages screen indicates that the message has not been sent.

Make sure the radio is turned on (Home screen, click the Turn Wireless On icon), and verify you're in an area with sufficient wireless coverage. You can send and receive e-mail messages only if the letters GPRS or EDGE appear under the wireless coverage indicator. SMS messages may be sent and receviced under both GPRS, EDGE and GSM.

Check the Network screen to determine whether your handheld has been activated on the network.

Try resending your message. As long as a clock icon appears beside the message, another attempt will be made to transmit the original message. Refer to the Technical support page with the User Guide for detailed information on resending messages.

What do I do if the BlackBerry Internet Service does not recognize my ISP e-mail address?

If the BlackBerry Internet Service cannot add your email address, complete one of the following actions:

  1. Select the Re-enter email address and password option.
  2. Type your email address and password again.
  3. Select the option.
  4. Click Next.
  5. Select the This is my personal email account option. Click Next.
  6. Select one of the following access options for your personal email account:
    • Automatically detect my Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express settings, Click Next. Complete the instructions on the screen to download and install an application that accesses the Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Outlook Express options on your computer.
  7. Click Next.

How do I manually reconcile e-mail messages from my BlackBerry device?

To manually reconcile e-mail messages from your BlackBerry device, please follow the steps below:

  1. If you've enabled wireless e-mail reconciliation, changes made to messages on your handheld are reflected on your BlackBerry Web Client account within a short period of time. If there are pending changes on your handheld that you want to quickly reconcile, you can reconcile the e-mail messages from your handheld manually.
  2. On the Home screen, click the Messages icon.
  3. Click the trackwheel to view the menu and click "Reconcile Now"
  4. Your handheld will reconcile e-mail messages between your handheld and BlackBerry Internet Service e-mail account.

Can I change the intervals that the BlackBerry Internet Service retrieves my e-mails?

No, at the moment time intervals are set to 7-15 minutes. If you can forward your e-mail from the Internet Service Providers mail service to your BlackBerry Internet Server e-mail account (your.name@fido.blackberry.com), you can receive e-mails as soon as the BIS server receives them

Can I stop e-mail being forwarded to my BlackBerry ?

Yes, in the auto reply section, type the message you want the sender to receive and create a filter to stop all forwarding of your e-mail messages or or, enable the "When no filters apply" option: to *Forward messages to device *Do not forward messages to device.

How do I create an auto signature to be added at the end of my BlackBerry Internet Service email messages?

To create an auto signature:

  1. Log in to your BlackBerry Internet Service account.
  2. Click on Options.
  3. In the "Auto signature" box. Create an auto signature that can automatically appear in outgoing messages. Click on "OK".

Which multi-media files does the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 support?

The BlackBerry Pearl 8100 supports the following file formats:

How do you play music on the BlackBerry Pearl 8100?

Play audio files, such as .aac, .amr, .m4a, .midi, .mp3, or .wav files, from the BlackBerry® device memory or a media card.

  1. Roll the trackball to the Media icon, and click the trackball.
  2. In the media application, click a media type.
  3. Click a media folder that contains songs.
  4. Perform one of the following actions:
    To play one song, click the song.
    To play all the songs in the media folder, press the Menu key. Click Play Folder.
    To play all the songs in the media folder and any subfolders, press the Menu key. Click Play All.
  5. Click Shuffle.

While listening to music, you can use other applications on your device.

How do I transfer music, photo, and video files on the BlackBerry Pearl 8100 from my computer?

If you connect your BlackBerry Pearl 8100 to your computer, you can transfer files between your media card and your computer using mass storage mode.

Or, you can transfer media files between your device and your computer using the media manager tool in the BlackBerry Desktop Manager. Visit Technical support page to download the Desktop Manager.

How can I manage my BlackBerry using my desktop PC?

You will need to download and install Desktop Manager. The latest version of Desktop Manager can be found on Fido Technical suppport page

How does the camera work on the BlackBerry Pearl 8100?

To activate the camera, press the Right Convenience key on your BlackBerry Pearl 8100. To zoom in and out of a subject, roll the trackball up or down or press the volume keys on the right side of the BlackBerry Pearl 8100. The “+” will zoom in, the “-“ will zoom out. To take a picture, click the trackball or press the Enter key on the keypad.

By default, when you take a picture, the camera will save the picture to your BlackBerry® device memory.

  1. In the camera, click the trackball.
  2. Perform one of the following actions:
    • To take another picture, click the camera icon.
    • To delete the picture, click the trash can icon.
    • To set the picture as a caller ID picture or Home screen background, click the crop icon.
    • To forward the picture, click the envelope icon.
    • To rename and save the picture, click the folder icon.
