Understanding taxes on your bill

The following table provides details regarding the application of taxes and its characteristics.Remember that federal and provincial taxes apply on any type of charges according to government regulations. They depend on the billing address, the area code (or province) of the phone number, or of where the services were used.

Most of the time, the taxes apply according to the phone number, but some charges are taxed according to the account level (based on the billing address) as described above.

What can be taxed and how?

  • Charges apply according to the phone number.
  • GST & PST (or HST if applicable) will apply as per the home province of your phone number.
Usage charges inCanada
e.g. long-distance calls, conference calls, call forwarding, text messaging
  • Charges apply according to the phone number.
  • GST & PST (or HST if applicable) will apply as per the 2 out of 3 rule.

    The 2 out of 3 rule for usage charges in Canada

    If 2 out of the 3 items below originate from the same province, GST & PST (or HST if applicable) of that province will apply:

    - Area code (or province) of the phone number
    - Origin of call
    - Destination of the call

    If the 2 out of 3 rule cannot be applied, provincial sales tax will apply depending on the physical location of the service

    - This rule applies for Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Ontario, British-Columbia and Manitoba only
    - Provincial sales tax does not apply for the remaining provinces.

Usage when outside ofCanada
(Roaming)
  • Charges apply according to the phone number.
  • No Canadian tax will apply for calls made to locations outside of Canada.
  • GST & PST (or HST if applicable) will apply for calls made to locations inside the home province of your phone number.
  • Only GST (or HST if applicable) will apply on calls made to another province in Canada (other than inside the home province of your phone number).
Other charges or credits
e.g. change of phone number, activation fee (if applicable)
  • Charges apply according to the phone number.
  • GST & PST (or HST if applicable) will apply as per the home province of your phone number.
  • These charges and credits will appear in the “Other charges and credits” section of your bill.
Other charges or credits
e.g. charge for paper bill
  • Charges apply according to the account level.
  • GST & PST (or HST if applicable) will apply based on the province of your billing address.
  • These charges and credits will appear in the “Account charges and credits” section of your bill.
Late payment fee
  • Taxes never apply on late payment fees.

  • Taxes never apply on FidoDollars.
