Billing and Usage

Understanding partial or prorated charges

When subscribing to an add-on or making a change to your monthly price plan, partial charges and prorated usage may occur. This happens due to the fact that all recurring charges are billed one month in advance.

Our services often include a fixed number of units for a one month period, i.e. 200 local minutes, 100 text messages, etc. In the following examples, we will use the term unit to describe any type of usage in order to simplify the understanding of the information below.

Things to Know

  • On your bill, recurring monthly service charges appear in the “Regular charges” section and the prorated amount of the service charges in the “Partial charges” section.
  • A month is always considered 30 days.
  • On your first bill, you will see partial charges for all your services.
  • Recurring monthly services are billed only for the number of days you subscribed to them and this also impacts the number of units included in the services.
Add-on example

When subscribing to a new add-on or making a change to your existing add-ons, the new charges for the current month (a partial month of service) as well as a full month of charges for the following month of service will appear on your bill. Also, the number of units available until the end of your current bill will be prorated.

  • Example: 10 days before the end of your current bill, you activate an add-on that costs $6 per month for 120 units of usage. On your next bill you will see a $2 charge under Partial charges for the 10 days of service you have used and a $6 charge under Regular charges for the recurring monthly fee. Since the amount for the last 10 days of your current bill is partial, you will also only have a prorated number of units. For 10 days, you will therefore have 40 units available to use. Any usage over those 40 units will generate additional charges. When your new bill starts, you will have 120 units available to use since you are paying the complete amount for the add-on, for a complete month.

When removing an add-on before the end of your current bill, you will be reimbursed for the period of time you didn’t benefit from the add-on. This will happen for all recurring charges since they are billed one month in advance. Also, the number of units that were available at the beginning of your current bill will be prorated.

  • Example: 10 days before the end of your current bill, you remove an add-on that costs $6 per month for 120 units of usage. On your next bill you will see a $2 credit under Partial charges for the 10 days of service that you didn’t have the add-on, and the monthly recurring charge will no longer appear under Regular charges. Since the amount for the last 10 days of the current month will be credited on your next bill, you will also have fewer units available for the first 20 days of your current bill. For the first 20 days, you will therefore have 80 units available to use, and any usage over those 80 units will generate additional charges.
Monthly price plan example

When changing your monthly price plan, Fido recommends that you make the change at the beginning of your next bill, to avoid partial charges and prorated units. If you make the change effective before the end of your current bill, this will generate a partial credit (for your old monthly plan) and a partial charge (for the new monthly plan) for the number of days each monthly price plan was activated, and the number of units available in both monthly price plans will also be prorated.

  • Example: 15 days before the end of your current bill, you change your monthly price plan effective immediately; you are changing from a $20 price plan with 200 units included per month to a $30 price plan with 300 units included per month. On your next bill you will see a $10 credit and a $15 charge under Partial charges for the old and the new price plans and you will also see the new recurring $30 charge under Regular charges for the new price plan. For the first 15 days, the old $20 price plan will cost you $10 so the number of available units went from 200 to 100. Any usage over 100 units will generate additional charges. For the last 15 days, the new $30 price plan will cost you $15 so the number of available units will decrease from 300 to 150. Any usage over 150 units will generate additional charges.
